La pittura del periodo d’oro dell’arte genovese è presentata e raccontata in mostra attraverso uno stimolante dialogo tra temi opposti. Attraverso cinque sezioni tematiche il visitatore scopre opere a contrasto, per un inedito confronto tra rappresentazioni dei molteplici aspetti dell’arte e della società del tempo. In un ideale viaggio che continuamente muove dal particolare all’universale si susseguono lungo il percorso “Straordinario e quotidiano”, “Miseria e nobiltà”, “Ozio e negozio”, “Santi e peccatori” e “Corpi svelati e abiti indossati”.

Quaranta opere di artisti genovesi dal Cinquecento al Settecento tra disegni e dipinti provenienti da musei e collezioni private mettono in luce aspetti comuni e inconsueti della società del tempo. Venti pittori tra cui Bernardo Strozzi, Grechetto, Gioacchino Assereto, Luciano Borzone, Domenico Fiasella, i fratelli De Wael, Bartolomeo Guidobono, Alessandro Magnasco offrono al visitatore la chiave per confrontarsi con donne e uomini dipinti secoli fa ma mossi dalle sempre presenti umane contraddizioni.

Aspetti concreti o ideali dell’esistenza affiorano dalle opere degli artisti, non solo quando “fotografano” accadimenti o personaggi reali, ma anche quando raccontano per immagini storie straordinarie, lontane dal quotidiano: soggetti sacri, mitologici o di storia antica, slegati dal presente.

La mostra è un viaggio nella vita a Genova ai tempi della Repubblica attraverso lo sguardo degli artisti, attenti osservatori del quotidiano e testimoni privilegiati di eventi straordinari.

The exhibition presents and tells the story of painting during the golden age of Genoese art in the form of a stimulating dialogue between opposites. The visitor is taken through five thematic sections and given the chance to discover contrasting works as part of a novel comparison between various representations of the multiple aspects of art and society at that time. Going on an imaginary journey that proceeds continually from the particular to the universal, the visitor follows a path that takes in a succession of themes: “Extraordinary and Everyday”, “Poverty and Nobility”, “Work and Leisure”, “Saints and Sinners” and “Uncovered Bodies and Clothes Worn”.

Forty works by Genoese artists from the 16th to the 18th centuries, including drawings and paintings from museums and private collections, shed light on both ordinary and unusual features of the society of the time. Twenty painters – including Bernardo Strozzi, Grechetto, Gioacchino Assereto, Luciano Borzone, Domenico Fiasella, the De Wael brothers, Bartolomeo Guidobono, and Alessandro Magnasco – offer an insight into the lives of men and women who were painted centuries ago but who epitomise the contradictions that have always beset mankind.

Both real and imaginary aspects of existence emerge from the works by these artists, not only when they take “snapshots” of real events or characters, but also when they use images to recount extraordinary stories far removed from everyday life, in other words, when they address sacred subjects or motifs drawn from mythology or ancient history and thus disconnected from the present.

The exhibition takes the visitor on a journey through life in Genoa at the time of the Republic through the eyes of artists, attentive observers of everyday life and privileged witnesses to extraordinary events.
