Nell’estate 2020, dopo i difficili mesi di lockdown e di distanziamento sociale legato alla pandemia da Covid-19, Palazzo Ducale in collaborazione con Arthemisia e con il Museo Marmottan Monet di Parigi ha realizzato un piccolo prodigio: una esperienza a contatto diretto con un’opera d’arte, una delle più belle e iconiche della storia dell’arte, una delle Ninfee di Monet.

Nel 2023 si rinnova l’esperienza unica dell’incontro con un capolavoro, in questo caso con il dipinto di Vincent van Gogh, Paesaggio con covoni di grano e luna nascente. L’opera, olio su tela del 1889, è uno degli ultimi dipinti realizzati da van Gogh prima della morte, ed è attualmente custodita al Kröller-Müller Museum, Otterlo, The Netherlands.

Ricoverato presso l’ospedale psichiatrico di Saint-Rémy, van Gogh dipinge e disegna moltissimo in un periodo terribile della sua vita, ma allo stesso tempo fecondissimo.

Tra le diverse opere di quel momento spicca questo straordinario paesaggio che è reale e dell’animo al tempo stesso, come aveva ben compreso Octave Mirbeau, parlando proprio di van Gogh: “Non si era immedesimato nella natura, aveva immedesimato in sé stesso la natura; l’aveva obbligata a piegarsi, a modellarsi secondo le forme del proprio pensiero, a seguirlo nelle sue impennate, addirittura a subire le sue deformazioni”.

Un’opera che giunge a Genova quasi come un testimone sulla rotta di The Ocean Race, giungendo dai Paesi Bassi, tappa prima di Genova, in questa straordinaria regata.

In the summer of 2020, after the difficult months of lockdown and social distancing made necessary by the Covid-19 pandemic, Palazzo Ducale in collaboration with Arthemisia and the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris worked a small miracle for its visitors – enabling them to experience direct contact with a work of art, in this case one of the most beautiful and iconic in the history of art, namely one of Monet’s Water Lilies.

After the many months we had all spent sitting in front of monitors and digital screens, the idea was to transform distancing into an opportunity for an exciting, immersive aesthetic experience, taking advantage of the period of isolation to rediscover direct contact, contemplation and the expressive power of a work of art.

Now, in 2023 the unique experience of encountering a masterpiece is being revived, this time focusing on a painting by Vincent van Gogh, Landscape with Sheaves and Rising Moon. This oil on canvas from 1889 is one of the last paintings van Gogh made before his death and is currently housed at the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo (the Netherlands).

After being admitted to the psychiatric hospital of Saint-Rémy, van Gogh went on to spend a terrible yet fruitful period of his life painting and drawing extensively.

This extraordinary landscape stands out among the various works he produced during this period; it is both real and spiritual at the same time. Octave Mirbeau understood this perfectly: “[van Gogh] was not absorbed in nature; rather he had absorbed nature within himself; he forced it to become more supple, to mould itself to the forms of his thought, to follow him in his flights of fancy, to submit even to his characteristic deformations”.

This work reaches Genoa as a kind of baton on the last leg – from the Netherlands to Genoa – along the route of the extraordinary regatta that bears the name of the Ocean Race.
