Letizia Battaglia It’s me
Sottoporticato, fino al 1° novembre 2023

Today’s role of Letizia Battaglia in the history of international photography has an immense value. In Une histoire mondiale des femmes photographes, by Luce Lebart and Marie Robert, Laetitia Guillemin recalls Letizia Battaglia especially when she was working for L’Ora, the Palermo daily newspaper, during the bloody Mafia war, back in the 1970s and 1980s.
Letizia Battaglia, It’s me is not something Letizia would have ever said. We do so, taking this sentence from a much more complex statement she made during an interview
a few years ago.
With this exhibition, we follow up with the tradition of breaking patterns, erasing themes, and ignoring chronologies with a view to constructing a polyphonic work, as representative as possible, and offering a unified vision of her oeuvre spanning over almost five decades.
Photography and everyday life walk side by side along a single path that highlights outstanding visual sensitivity, the courage to be just a “punch or caress away”, in order to
capture an image, often taken in contexts which, while extreme, are always full of dignity.
Letizia Battaglia got to photography after a series of fortuitous events, and it then became an important tool for her empowerment as a woman and mother.
