face to face with a masterpiece<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the summer of 2020, after the difficult months of lockdown and social distancing made necessary by the Covid-19 pandemic, Palazzo Ducale in collaboration with Arthemisia and the Mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet in Paris worked a small miracle for its visitors \u2013 enabling them to experience direct contact with a work of art, in this case one of the most beautiful and iconic in the history of art, namely one of Monet\u2019s Water Lilies.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the many months we had all spent sitting in front of monitors and digital screens, the idea was to transform distancing into an opportunity for an exciting, immersive aesthetic experience, taking advantage of the period of isolation to rediscover direct contact, contemplation and the expressive power of a work of art.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, in 2023 the unique experience of encountering a masterpiece is being revived, this time focusing on a painting by Vincent van Gogh, Landscape with Sheaves and Rising Moon. This oil on canvas from 1889 is one of the last paintings van Gogh made before his death and is currently housed at the Kr\u00f6ller-M\u00fcller Museum in Otterlo (the Netherlands).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After being admitted to the psychiatric hospital of Saint-R\u00e9my, van Gogh went on to spend a terrible yet fruitful period of his life painting and drawing extensively.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This extraordinary landscape stands out among the various works he produced during this period; it is both real and spiritual at the same time. Octave Mirbeau understood this perfectly: \u201c[van Gogh] was not absorbed in nature; rather he had absorbed nature within himself; he forced it to become more supple, to mould itself to the forms of his thought, to follow him in his flights of fancy, to submit even to his characteristic deformations\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This work reaches Genoa as a kind of baton on the last leg \u2013 from the Netherlands to Genoa \u2013 along the route of the extraordinary regatta that bears the name of the Ocean Race.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
